1. Subconscious beliefs and unprocessed emotions can create illness or weakness within the body-mind.
2. Non-physical influences have a greater effect on treatment outcomes than physical variables.
Truth #1: When I started my first alternative medical practice in the mid-aughts, I focused on the physical body - herbs, nutrition, physical interventions, environmental factors, etc. What I now understand is that negative beliefs can program the subconscious mind to create disharmony within physiological systems. Moreover, charged memories of prior pain or trauma can disrupt the healthy functions of cells, organs, and systems until these memories are discharged through techniques such as bilateral eye stimulation.
Emotions also carry charge and very often this energy is distributed by the liver to the connective tissue, joints, and interstitial spaces of the body when a person fails to process and release the emotion. The result can be psychosomatic illness or imbalance.
Truth #2: Humans can see approximately 0.0035 percent of the electromagnetic spectrum. This suggests the vast majority of reality is unseen (though not necessarily unfelt).
To base the entirety of one’s wellness practice on solely physical interventions seems incomplete and sub-optimal, especially when there are extant writings in the Vedas that speak of at least five bodies or sheaths comprising the human energy system. The diagram on this page shows the kosha (sheath) system with the physical body being the densest sheath and the bliss sheath being the most refined. Beliefs in the intellect and mental sheaths inform the energy (feeling) sheath which then manifest in the physical body. I've written a bit more on this subject here.
Mainstream or conventional healing interventions attempt to alter the physical sheath largely with physical interventions – which seems logical, per se. However, far greater leverage for change will occur on the level of the mental sheath, which is where many of our subconscious beliefs reside. However, you can’t just go straight to a belief without first accessing the specific program on the feeling level – the energy sheath. So, the wise and effective healer also addresses emotional layers of causation which directly inform the physical expression of the imbalance.
The inner wisdom of the body-mind will do its job of healing if we align our conscious and subconscious beliefs with it. First, we access the feelings attending the condition in the body-mind. Next, we determine the belief structure underlying the feelings. Third, we then apply the discernment of the conscious mind to reveal the irrationality of the false belief and release it. I've oversimplified the process but you get the idea.
This led me to study mental health at Basytr Naturopathic University and examine biopsychosocial factors of wellness. Unfortunately, physical maladies are beyond the clinical scope of mental health professionals, and I realized I needed to blend my training in alternative medicine with my education in psychology and the Tao of Christianity, and the result was Inner Wisdom Psychology.
